Pirates 3-Peat as IVC Conference Champs!
Senior night in Sugarcreek had an extra special feeling as the Garaway Pirates finished off conference play with a 14-0 win over Newcomerstown. The win secured the conference title for the third season in a row. Over the past 3 years the Garaway Pirates have dominated the Inter-Valley Conference, amassing an overall record of 45-3. The Pirates have gone 15-1 in each of those seasons.
The seven seniors on this yearâs team have seen plenty of success over the past four years. To date, this class has won 95 games, 3 conference titles, and two District championships. Those seniors stamped an exclamation point on their last conference game, accounting for 14 hits and 13 RBIâs.
After getting off to a slow start against Newcomerstown in the sectional semi-final game yesterday, the Pirates wasted little time.
Chelsi Rothacher doubled to center field to start the game. Kaitlyn Stress drilled a single to bring in Rothacher. Kassidy Reidenbach followed with a walk. Hannah Halstead moved the runners up a base with a ground out, setting it up for Allison Luneborg. Luneborg delivered with a 2 RBI double. Amber Monigold joined in on the hit parade with a line shot double into left field. A single up the middle by Sierra Slentz put Garaway up 5-0. Madeline Smith lined a single, which ended the night for Trojan starter Gabby McPeek. Raegan Smith entered the game as the pitcher for Newcomerstown. Rothacher ripped a shot into deep right field that Deserae Harbold caught to end the inning.
Garawayâs strong hitting carried into the second inning. With one out, Reidenbach lined a single to left field. Hannah Halstead reached on an error. Luneborg singled to drive in Reidenbach. Halstead was thrown out at third base on the play, causing an uproar in the Pirate crowd as the call was obviously not correct. Amber Monigold followed with a single, putting runners on the corners. Ashley Shrock cranked a triple down the right field line to plate two more runs for the Pirates. Sierra Slentz finished off the scoring with an RBI single, putting Garaway up 9-0 after two innings of play.
The third inning saw Garaway add four more runs on the board. Stress started it off with a one out single. Reidenbach drilled a shot to center which was caught for out number two. The Pirates then went to work with two outs. Halstead singled in a run and moved to second on the throw. Luneborg stroked another double, scoring Halstead. Monigold singled in Luneborg. Slentz picked up her third RBI single, plating Monigold. The Pirates were now up 13-1.
Kassidy Reidenbach finished off the scoring in the 4th with an RBI double.
Allison Luneborg picked up her 13th win of the season. It was also her 7th shutout of the year. That breaks the previous record of 6 which Luneborg shared with Maria Koshmider.
Garaway returns to action on Wednesday with a Sectional Final match-up with Coshocton. Game time is 5:00. Admission will be $6.00.
